Hey everybody Rob Ma, we're here, happy Friday. Today we've got some new details on the Cybertruck, including a pretty wild test that Tesla has completed, some price changes, new info on Giga Mexico and a few other items as well. By looking at the stock, the rough week, earnings week continues down 3.7% today, closing at $211.99. The NASDAQ not helping again today down 1.5%. So at least with this performance, Tesla returning to more of a normal beta that we tend to see normally with the stock. So we'll move on from that, hopefully, a better week next week.
But kind of an exciting update on the Cybertruck today. Tesla and her Silicon Valley on X posting a video that was shot by a member of the club there. And they spotted a Cybertruck driving down the highway with what appeared to be a significant number of bullets impacts on the side of the vehicle. And later on we got a nice pretty nice shot of that in the daytime parked somewhere, driving somewhere, a little bit higher resolution. So obviously it looks like Tesla has done some unique testing here on the Cybertruck on this release candidate vehicle. Most likely, Elon did reply to this video saying, quote, we emptied the entire drum magazine of a Tommy gun into the driver door, Al Capone style, no bullets penetrated into the passenger compartment. End quote.
So we heard Tesla talk about this at the Cybertruck release that this was something that they had tested. We haven't seen the test results like we are seeing here today. So kind of fun to see that. Between this and the Cybertruck pulling around a Starlink Raptor or a Starship SpaceX Raptor engine, I think we're gonna have some pretty cool promotional footage potentially for the Cybertruck when Tesla does get ready to kind of release that information and some of these videos. Obviously we're gonna be waiting for the Cybertruck test crash video to the Tesla T's on April 1st. So a lot to look forward to. I would hope that Tesla does release this at some point because it would be pretty cool to see this test. Now obviously anything like this, people always get up in arms about whether it's bullet proof or not, I guess we can call it bullet resistance.
Everyone likes to talk about different calipers of bullets and things like that, but still, I think it's impressive. If you were to do this on any normal vehicle, I think the results would end up being much different. So still cool to kind of see the results here from Tesla. So keep an eye out for more on that. And then we also have some more information today on the Cybertruck from the Vindicoder, which has been published for the model year 2024 for Cybertruck. So this changes each year. And this year we get new information on the Cybertruck from this.
So when you look at the Vindicoder, each digit in a VIN indicates different things in a vehicle identification number. So for the Cybertruck here, what we're looking at specifically is digit six, which has the girls' vehicle weight rating, and then digit eight, which has the motor and drive unit indication. So starting with digit six, this is telling us for the Cybertruck if it's indicated in digit six that there's a G there, it has a gross vehicle weight rating of between 8,000 and 9,000 pounds. If there's an H there, gross vehicle weight rating between 9,000 and 10,000 pounds. So that is the total gross vehicle weight rating that includes the payload. So it's not the Cybertruck by itself weighing this amount. So obviously that would be quite heavy. But Tesla at the release date said this would be the Cybertruck would have a 3500 pound payload. So this kind of tells us that at a minimum, the Cybertruck is gonna be, if you subtract 3500 pounds out of 8,000 at the low end or 9,000 at the high end of this lower range, gonna be somewhere between 3500 and, or sorry, 4,500 and 5500 pounds, assuming that payload state at the same.
And again, that's on the low end, it would then potentially increase up to 6,500 pounds on the high end if you'd take the payload out of this 10,000 pound end of the range here.
So again, the payload could have changed since the release, it's been a while obviously.
So we'll have to wait and see, we can't take too much away from this quite yet, but still interesting to see that.
And then on the motor side, two interesting indicators here, D for dual motor and E for triple motor.
So I think we've kind of all ended up in this place.
Yolana talked once about a quad motor Cybertruck.
That seemed to be a table at some point.
Looks like they are gonna go ahead with the triple motor as the performance version as indicated by this VIN.
And what's kind of interesting with all of this put together, we did previously see a vehicle identification number.
So Gregor Shuckscher that again on Twitter today, Ron X today.
And in this VIN, we can see that the sixth digit is H and we get an E for electric and then the eighth digit is D.
So if we come back here, H is indicating somewhere between 9,000 and 10,000 pounds.
D is indicating dual motor.
So not the triple motor, which obviously the extra motor is gonna carry some extra weight.
So even though it is the fewer motor configuration, it's still falling into the higher weight class vehicle here.
That could be driven by payload, but if payloads are the same, which the release or the delivery, not the delivery event, the unveiling event indicated, if that has not changed, it would be interesting to see the dual motor falling into that heavier weight class, which if that's the case, if this is the lightest vehicle, then why would we have this lower weight class?
Obviously again, that could be driven by payload, but could also be driven by two different battery configurations for a dual motor vehicle.
And maybe we don't see those initially, but maybe that's something that Tesla has kind of in mind over time.
So interesting to see the again, the VIN here on this dual motor variant indicating this higher weight class.
So it's not much, but something interesting there as we can kind of wait for the delivery event in a little over a month from now.
Alright, next we've got an update on a on Gigamexico.
So obviously we've talked a little bit about this over the last couple of days, but the mayor of Santa Catarina, which is a new way of the Leon where Tesla's building Gigamexico will build Gigamexico.
They said that at the state and municipal level, they're moving ahead with studies for the infrastructure requested by Tesla, which will amount to more than two and a half billion pesos, roughly $136 million provided by the state.
So we had talked before about, I think it was Reuters that had previously reported that there were conversations going on between Tesla and the Mexican government there about what kind of funding would be provided by the state for infrastructure.
This is gonna be a multi-billion dollar investment.
I think up to $10 billion is kind of what we've heard before from Tesla.
So it's a small percentage of that total investment, but every little bit helps.
And hopefully they'll kind of get started on those types of things quickly and early.
We heard Tesla talk about working on long lead time items right now, infrastructure could be one of those things, of course.
And then the other interesting update, again, we heard from Elon on the call that they're kind of slowing things down.
Not sure exactly when they're gonna start construction.
The mayor of Santa Catarina not necessarily means a whole lot here, but said that they hoped in the first half of 2024 to have the start of Tesla's construction.
So that's probably a little bit earlier than it sounded like Elon indicated.
He said, you know, maybe next year.
I don't remember the exact words he used, but it seems like they're at least hopeful that that will be in the earlier part of the year.
So I'm gonna have those couple of updates on Gigamexico.
And then we do have a couple of new price changes for Tesla, quick one here in the US.
Model X Plaid has been updated to $94,990.
Model X Plaid
That's a $5,000 increase over the previous list price.
It actually increases the non-existent difference between the Plaid Model S and the Plaid Model X now, which is kind of interesting.
Usually when we see price increases, you could take that as a sign of strong order rates.
With the Model X Plaid, I'm not necessarily taking in that way.
I'm more taking it as a sign of inelasticity for the specific vehicle.
If we go back to the original release, Tesla'd actually price the Model S Plaid and the Model X Plaid at the same price level.
And normally the Model X, as we can see from the long range versions, is more expensive.
Obviously it's gonna cost Tesla a lot more to produce it.
So for it to be priced the same initially, kind of indicated that Tesla anticipated more demand, I think, for the Model S Plaid versus the Plaid configuration of the Model X, they'd have pretty good insight on that from their performance versions historically. So my take on this is that they're probably just increasing this and getting engaged or relying on the elasticity, the elasticity of demand for this, again, specific vehicle, and trying to get some extra margin out of people on that one. So my thinking on that could be flawed, but I'm not necessarily taking it as a sign that, oh, there's amazing order rate for the Model X Plaid, specifically, although that would be welcome news as well.
And then in Canada, drive Tesla, Canada, recapping nicely here some price changes across the lineup. So the Model 3 has been reduced by $1,000. That does not affect the performance version. That prices unchanged, but for the rear wheel driving the long range, those have been reduced by $1,000. All trims of the Model Y reduced by $2,000. So these somewhat match the price changes that we had seen in the US, I think last week, maybe two weeks ago. And then for the Model S and X, so the Plaid increasing $8,000 Canadian, the Model X Plaid increasing $8,000 Canadian and the Model S Plaid increasing $2,000 Canadian. So somewhat matching the US price change there, and then a little bit of an increase on the Model S Plaid.
And then real quick, also in Canada, since we're kind of on a drive Tesla Canada right now, they also noticed that Ontario has committed $91 million in additional funding to expand EV charging infrastructure in Ontario. So nice to see that as well.
And then also on pricing, Sawyer has noticed on Twitter that Tesla has reduced the price of the two hour megapack by a little over $100,000. Obviously megapack pricing is a little bit tricky because it changes based on scale, based on how many megapacks are being ordered. And he's also noticed that the installation price has increased pretty much commensurate with the decrease in actual price. So overall, the net here should be pretty minimal, but something to keep an eye on. As the megapack becomes a bigger part of Tesla's business, which we've definitely seen over the last couple of quarters, certainly from a girls profitability perspective, we probably need to start paying attention, a little bit closer attention to megapack pricing and how that changes over time. So I'll try to do a little bit better job of that.
All right, and then interesting update here on a lawsuit that Tesla had previously filed in Louisiana. So this lawsuit was against the dealers association and members of the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission, a group of dealers as well, basically claiming that they were working together to hurt Tesla's business essentially, to kind of just put it simply. This case was, this was a lawsuit that Tesla had filed against this group and it had been dismissed. However, the US Justice Department looked at this case and they filed a brief to the court saying that their interpretation of some law regarding antitrust laws had been interpreted incorrectly. So with that, that will help Tesla in terms of appeals. An appeal has not been set a date for that yet, but this should be something that helps Tesla continue forward with that lawsuit and potentially win a case that would give them some more headway or make it a little bit easier for them to sell vehicles in Louisiana. Obviously, we've seen Tesla kind of do things like this case state by state. And I think this, the more support that Tesla can have for this, obviously the better for the business. So good to see that and we'll keep an eye out for any further dates on this legal action.
All right, just a quick update from Tesla Europe on X. They say that 14 years ago, they delivered the first Tesla Roadster to customers in Europe and today they've now hit one million Tesla vehicles on the road across Europe. So that's very exciting. Obviously, we've passed five million vehicles now for Tesla worldwide. So for a million of those in Europe, exciting to see that milestone for Tesla.
And then just a few quick things from other automakers, Lucid has announced that they will be, I think we've seen the renders of the Lucid gravity previously. I don't know if they've showed off the full vehicle, but it sounds like they will be doing that on November 16th. So a little less than a month from now at the LA Auto Show. Lucid, of course, in pretty dire straits right now. So we'll keep an eye on it, but it'll be interesting to see the vehicle. They say production will begin late next year. So not anything completely imminent right now. We'll see if Lucid takes it to that point, but it'll be interesting to see that vehicle nonetheless.
And then UAW, of course, since it's Friday, they've kind of stopped doing their striking expansion on Friday specifically, but GM has given an updated offer to the UAW. Sounds like Stellantis has as well. They've both matched forward's 23% increase over the four year contract that they're negotiating on, but Sean Fane not happy with that, saying that they've still got cars left, or that the UAW still has cars left to play, and these automakers still have money left to spend. So no agreements yet, but no further expansion at least today on strikes for the UAW.
And then Volkswagen next week will be reporting their full earnings. They did do a little bit of a pre-release, a little bit of a warning today, saying that they expect a 2.7 billion non-cash loss due to hedging for raw materials that they had previously put in place. So they wanted to give people heads up that that was gonna impact their third quarter. However, they're still expecting for the year sales to be between nine and nine and a half knowing vehicles, which would put sales in terms of revenue up 10 to 15% year over year, obviously last year there were challenges that we've previously talked about across the auto industry.
And then they also said, this quarter specifically sales grew 12% so kind of right in the middle of that range. So Volkswagen earnings, other earnings reports next week in terms of macroeconomic things to keep an eye out for Wednesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell was speaking. I looked at that and it's not anything significant. It doesn't look like introductory remarks at this lecture. So probably nothing material there. But then the PCE report will come out Friday pre-market. So we'll keep an eye out for that.
All right, that'll wrap it up for today though. So as always, thank you for listening. Make sure you're subscribed and signed up for notifications. You can also find me on X at Tesla podcast. And we'll see on Monday for the October 23 episode of Tesla Daily. Thank you.
