What we're going to explain to you today is that LiDAR is a fool's errand, and anyone relying on LiDAR is doomed. Dirmed, expensive sensors that are unnecessary. It's like having a whole bunch of expensive pandices. One appendix is bad, well, now we're a whole bunch of them. That's ridiculous. You'll see.

So it's true that Tesla is adding radar back in, but it's much more nuanced than that, because they're really not adding the same old radar, basically admitting that they made a mistake. It's really an entirely new technology, a much more high definition radar that they will then be incorporating. So I hesitate to say they're bringing it back, because they're actually not, they're implementing something new. That to the best of my knowledge did not even exist before, so they had to wait for the technology to be there. I wanted to clarify it, because in forums, I see people parrot that talking point that Jordan said many times without that added nuance.

Last week, Elon had mentioned doing an FSD12. Remember, FSD12 should no longer be a beta live stream on X, but that never happened. Dirty Tesla then brought it up, to which Elon said, maybe I can squeeze it in tomorrow night, and he said this yesterday on Thursday. Then at 3.14 AM Eastern Standard Time, Elon said that stream should be expected tomorrow around 4 PM Pacific time or 7 PM Eastern time. It could be interpreted either way, but I'm guessing Elon was tweeting this around midnight before he went to bed, insinuating that tomorrow would indeed mean Friday today. So be on the lookout for this one. I have my expectations very low, and I do think there's more risk with doing this than there is actual reward, especially if the media grabs something that maybe goes awry during this live stream, but I do want to hear a lot more about FSD12 and what it entails, so hopefully we get some of that detail.

Electric Felix shared the first video I've seen of somebody actually using the new screens on Tesla's V4 Superchargers. Tap and go. You'll notice that this is a contactless charger. I can also use it obviously with the Tesla app, but I haven't got that. So I'm going to pay here and move that. Hopefully I'll get that 20 pound back, and we can see here charging it. Like I said, I only can, but I'll see, I only take 64 kilowatts, but it's over.

Adding this feature will give more flexibility to non-Tesla owners having this tap and go payment system, and it will have some of the basic charging statistics right on the screen during the charge in case their non-Tesla EV doesn't have that information in their car. And at the same time in Taiwan, Tesla is actually rolling out an entirely separate device from a supercharging stall just to have a screen due to regulations. Drive Tesla picked up on a report that said at least three supercharger locations in Taiwan now have this separate standalone screen. These new regulations in Taiwan require a display screen so the car owner can see how much electricity has been consumed to the third decimal place. With this new system looking at these pictures, the user can select the stall number that they're at and then once they initiate the charge, they can see how much energy they've consumed. This of course would be geared toward non-Tesla owners. Taiwan has not yet officially been added to the non-Tesla supercharger pilot, but seeing this would lead me to believe that's right around the corner. These anecdotes right here are why I think we're not seeing V4 anywhere in the states yet because they're waiting to see what the regulations will be and how this whole NACS CCS shake out is going to work.

That said, Tesla is not totally leaving us Americans in the dark with supercharging opening up new sites like this with yes the cyber canopy. As I've said before, this is the model I would love to see at every supercharging location, the canopies for protection from the elements with of course the added solar power and big 84 stall sites like this gearing up for the expected ramp are always good to see. I know Rob talked about this last night, but I had to share it here in case even one of you missed it. We're looking at this interior potentially RGB light strip throughout the cyber truck and me as a sucker for interior ambiance. I was so excited to see this personally. I would still probably be interested in an aftermarket kit with more lighting and more accessories, more customization, but this is definitely a great start and hopefully something we see on the final production variant.

And just a reminder, when you create innovative compelling products, they will market themselves. Look at that, a Tesla cyber truck was spotted on the road in Northern California this week just days after the company announced the first one had rolled off the assembly line. Jeff Takahashi recorded this video showing the electric truck taking off from the stoplight and then going around the corner. The truck will make you do a double take. It has a wedge shape and stainless steel body and looks nothing like a traditional pickup. Joe Tett-Mayer shared this image from Gigatexis of the cyber truck with the front popped parked right by the window. So it's almost like Tesla wants us to see this, but at the same time they want to remind us they're still doing testing. So actual customers will need to be patient for these deliveries.

We've seen the construction and progress of Tesla's train station at Gigabrelin from the drone flyovers, but today Tasmanian said this will actually start transporting people in September. It'll run about 60 times per day and transport not only factory employees, but will be free for use by citizens. The actual start day September 4th, it should run during the weekdays Monday through Friday and will deliver more than 1500 employees per shift directly to the factory building, reducing all of the transport costs because Gigabrelin kind of relatively is in the middle of nowhere so employees have to travel. So in about two weeks we should start to see some drone video flyovers of this train in action that is also free.

If you have followed the Tesla story the last few years you will recall the right to repair movement being a controversial topic. Many DIY folks have wanted more information from Tesla specifically telematics data to do their own repairs, but Tesla was in the early days reluctant to give it due to security concerns and it makes sense they couldn't just have anybody working on a Tesla that didn't understand it because that would open people up to a lot of liability.

Now Tesla and Rivian have endorsed a new agreement backed by major automakers and independent repair shops for this right to repair movement that will include telematics data that is sometimes required for certain repairs. Under the new deal independent repair shops will continue to have access to the same diagnostic and repair info automakers make available to their authorized dealer networks as the technology evolves and it won't cover just telematics data but additionally all vehicle technologies and power trains including battery electric plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. Current Tesla owners have numerous options to repair their vehicles at commercial repair facilities including Tesla operated ones, Tesla affiliated ones, and independent repair facilities. Additionally Tesla owners can conduct a range of services on their own from Tesla's DIY guides to more complex repairs in their repair manuals. So this may not apply directly to a majority of you but plenty of people have attacked Tesla for this in the past so just keep this in the back of your mind and use this as ammo to fight the FUD.

If you've been around the channel you recall toward the end of last year the Model Y broke the best selling car record in Norway that was held since 1969 so the Model Y still selling like gangbusters in Norway breaking its own record it just set last year. This American made car index from cars.com was circulating today but this came out earlier in the summer back in June but in case a few of you missed it this is very important information to know about Tesla looking at the share of US light duty sales from domestic assembly for 2023 model years Tesla the only company at 100% of their US sales are made domestically and we've talked in the past about how Ford and GM will market their American made brand when in reality they fall well short of the standard that Tesla has set. And honestly right here this is a screenshot to take and send to your friends and family if they don't support Tesla and they live in America you have to wonder what's really going on do they not know about these facts or is there something deeper that needs addressed. I'm not saying everybody has to be a Tesla fan and like the vehicles and buy their cars but to not support them as an American made company just doesn't make sense to me.

From the driven Australia's biggest bank says EV loans have more than tripled over the past year which is good moving forward because now these banks will see the transition and maybe offer better incentives and better financing working with some of these EV companies. This new data from today said Australians had bought more EVs in the first half of 2023 than throughout all of 2022 EV loans soared 235% during the last financial year making them the fastest growing vehicle type for the bank.

On this one I would like to pump the brakes I think a lot of people are seeing this and thinking oh a strike is definitely going to happen but this really is just a negotiating tactic it's happened before and it's no guarantee of anything. But the UAW said 97% of its members had voted to authorize strikes against GM Ford and Stellantis if they can't come to a deal by the deadline September 14th. So far the big three have suggested they will probably agree to some form of higher wages pretty vague. I do think there's at least a chance a strike happens because this is a pivotal turning point for the auto industry but this alone does not guarantee that because again these authorization votes are really just a formality.

At the same time though in a separate deal GM has actually agreed to increase EV wages at one of its Altium plants by 25%. The wage increases will be between three and four dollars per hour this is still a tentative deal but if it goes through the workers will retroactively be paid back wages of between three and seven thousand dollars dating back to December of last year so essentially for all of 2023. To be clear this is a separate agreement from the UAW and the big three negotiations. It is confusing though because this Altium plant in Ohio is the first major organized battery plant in the country to be part of the UAW but this committee is still in the midst of negotiating many other topics.

So we have Tesla with a decade of cost advantages and supplier relationships and no unions and these other companies with the unions paying higher wages with none of that experience of lower prices or cost advantages and we have the scales continually being tipped further in Tesla's favor believe it or not. This may sound like hyperbole and most of you will know I'm not a fan of that at all but this study is potentially one of the best ones you could do for the auto industry looking at the next 10 to 20 years.

We have Gartner consultancy doing a digital automaker index focusing on eight software centric areas that you'll see in the green including things like culture and leadership, talent, architectures, connected vehicles, autonomous driving, smart cockpits, online sales potential etc. The goal is to find out which brands are in the best position to monetize their software capabilities. Looking at the results for 2023 no surprise at all Tesla in first place with a score of 80.1% second and third are Chinese companies Neo and X-Pang and then we have Rivian and Lucid in fourth and fifth.

This really highlights the importance of starting an EV company from the ground up first principles not transferring over legacy components throwing on some digital aspects. Many of you will remember this why Tata Motors CEO isn't worried about Tesla coming to India. Well I think they have another thing coming as you'll see them at the bottom of this list as part of Jaguar Land Rover at 24.7%. And then Stellantis, Honda and Toyota are other notables at the bottom of this list. Tesla and Neo got top scores in the culture and leadership category because they have a high number of leadership members with strong experience in the digital world. If an automaker is not very good in terms of selling online then they'll have great difficulties selling software. Stellantis has come out and said they plan to generate over $20 billion in profit from software sales by 2030 but this study highlights a problem that they're not achieving their promised evolution into being a tech company from an auto company fast enough. One of the creators of the index said if they don't address this it will just deteriorate then one day it might be game over. Personally I'd be comfortable removing the might be from that quote. We've already seen it how many problems has VW had with its software unit carry-ad where they can't roll out basic UI functionality features on their vehicles. And Jim Farley has said many times how much they have to change from dealing with 150 different suppliers for hardware and software trying to get them all to communicate than a company like Tesla who does almost everything in-house with their own software. Again these are things that the general public has no understanding of they have no idea of autonomous vehicles and how closely they really are and what the software world will look like in vehicles over the next 10 to 20 years.

Maybe just maybe we have an end to the funding secured saga. If this deal is finalized a group of investors may each receive about $12,000 for losses they claim they incurred due to that tweet. A total of 3,350 claims will be paid out of the fund to set up from the settlement if the plan is approved. That settlement was when Elon and Tesla both agreed to each pay $20 million. The judge said yesterday he would sign off on the plan on September 1st if there are no objections from Tesla or Elon. This could have been much worse for Elon and Tesla they'll end up paying out around $40 million but it was around $80 million the SEC said these investors were losing from that tweet. But during the trial one of the expert witnesses said that these investors lost around $12 billion just due to that one tweet. So I'm just speculating here but I'm guessing that Elon and Tesla will be aok with this $40 million settlement paid out to those 3300 plus investors and move on from here.

This could be a great example of Tesla's negotiating power with their Gigafactory conversations. About a year ago these deals fell apart because India said nope we're not going to lower our import taxes for EVs not for anybody including Tesla. Well fast forward to today and now reportedly they're working on a new ED policy that would slash import taxes for automakers that commit to some local manufacturing which Tesla has said they want to do.

To be clear though this is still just under consideration absolutely nothing is a done deal and then it gets confusing they said there is an understanding with Tesla's proposal and the government is showing interest but the finance minister said there is no proposal in front of me.

New Delhi is going to move slowly in considering the policy proposal as any lowering of taxes on imported EVs could disrupt the market and upset local players like Tata and Mahindra. An Indian official said this is going to go through a lot of deliberations even though the government is keen on getting Tesla that's because of the domestic players policy is still in the initial stages of deliberation and the final tax rate could change.

This anecdote does however confirm my thoughts that I don't think India will be the next gigafactory.

Polestar has announced a partnership with Mobileye to incorporate their chauffeur autonomous driving tech into the Polestar 4 that's set for a global release next year. This is Mobileye's hands-free point-to-point autonomous driving on highways.

In Canada Rivian is also messaging quad motor reservation holders asking them to switch to dual motor configurations so they can take delivery this year instead of waiting until next year.

A while back you might remember we talked about the Vermont Utility Green Mountain Power, this company that has subsidized customers who want battery backup power in exchange for using those batteries to lower the cost for the grid for consumers. I'm sharing this in the hope that this blueprint is eventually rolled out in other locations and pause if you want the details but simply customers can rent an option or they can buy it and be compensated to do so. But I think it's worth passing along because an executive said clearly the program is successful, it's performing as we expect and customers are looking for it. Previously there was a cap on how many customers could participate in this program each year and the waitlist to get powerwalls through the program went past 2026. Fast forward to now though and that cap is gone. Ensure the no cap here will be a slight boost to powerwall sales but in the grand scheme of things not a huge deal but it's the blueprint I hope we see more often.

Here you're looking at the upcoming Kia EV5 and no I didn't mean to say the EV9 that's a 3-row the 5 is going to be a 2-row smaller compact SUV. This is set to go on sale in China later this year and it should arrive in the US for the 2025 model year so potentially toward the end of 2024. This vehicle should compete directly with the Toyota BZ4X, the ID4 and the Model Y but we don't really have any specs on this vehicle just yet. Kia did say they'll share more details on this vehicle in October at an EV day event.

Nissan just rolled out a new retail strategy for its dealers and they said the model is intended to create an ecosystem where customers love Nissan and buy Nissan for the brand's value and not for the most recent rebate out there.
