摘要
The Monolith of Tlaloc is one of the most incredible ancient relics of the Americas, a giant stone carving of Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain, water, lightning and agriculture and because of his attributes and how they affect the lives of human civilisation, he was of course very important.
He was so important that his likeness was placed on the largest known monolith in the Americas. It weighs around 168 tonnes. It is 7 metres or 23 feet in height, is made of hard basalt rock and is likely around 500 to 600 years old.
It was discovered around 150 years ago on a dry streambed near the town of Coatlinchan and it stayed there until the 20th century. The dry streambed was being dug up to build an irrigation canal for crops when villagers came across this incredible statue, lying on its back.
How such a monolith was transported to this location is a mystery because we know just how difficult a task it was when people moved it to Mexico City in the 20th century.
