What's the future of tech journalism? Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg's launched their new site, Re/code, with undisclosed amount of backing from NBC and Terry Semel's Windsor Media. An editorial in PandoDaily intended to satirize callous tech workers in San Francisco. The New York Times editorial board wants the White House to show clemency for Edward Snowden, whom they call a "whistleblower." And in Bing Launch of the Week, we hit on two of the big technology trends blossoming in 2014: cryptocurrency and smart homes. You choose among the jokey Coinye West, central home sensor called the Ninja Sphere, and Bitcoin ATM machine Robocoin. Panelists Kara Swisher and Robert Scoble kick off the new year with a bang.

Highlights:
4:18 - JC: Re/code - same team, same quality, same events, journalism, correct?
6:30 - JC: In a long line of stupid blog posts (Peter Shih, AngelHack, etc.), now Bryan Goldberg on Pando
8:00 - JC: Kara, what do you think of this trend of young rich men behaving like his?
8:15 - KS: If my children talked like this, I'd smack them upside the head. Intelligence has its limitations, but stupidity is infinite.
8:45 - RS: Is it part of the hunger to get attention?
9:15 - JC: Bigger issue - diverse community with room for all, to the "Manhattanization" of SF
14:45 - JC: They should be paying to use the public bus stops...why don't they make public transport free and then Google & Facebook could subsidize?
15:22 Thank you http://Squarespace.com
17:05 - JC: NYT's editorial board wants Snowden to get off. Kara what do you think?
17:54 - KS: I have mixed feelings about the situation, but I think the gov is never going to give him clemency.
18:15 - JC: What do you think about the level of spying the gov is doing?
18:25 - KS: I assumed they were doing it. I'm offended by the lack of oversight.
19:25 - RS: I visited the Bush WH and argued. I knew they were spying, I just didn't know how.
21:35 - JC: Kara, you know all the tech execs, when we see them w/ the president, what is that? Does it affect policy?
22:00 - KS: Washington 2-step. They have to express their outrage in public, and I don't know what happens behind the scenes.
24:05 - RS: Startups are using the same techniques the NSA is using to build businesses. Tapingo, for example.
25:25 - Is Snapchat going to get away with this breach?
27:57 Thank you Scott Walker at Walker Corporate Law
29:30 - Intro Coinye West
- Ninja Sphere intro + video
31:25 - KS: There are tons of these things that are going to come out. Nest, for example. There's going to be a lot of automated house stuff in the next 10 years.
33:13 - JC: Bitcoin ATM... is Bitcoin something society will use in the future?
35:04 - RS: I'm excited by it. I know investors are excited by it. The average person has heard of it but not used it. I'm bullish on it, but quit my job, bullish on it.
35:54 - 36:07 Thanks to Bing
40:48 - RS: My boss and I joke that I'm just one tweet away from getting fired. When you live in public, you can destroy your career in one tweet. Justine Sacco, etc.
44:10 - JC: Is Silicon Valley Broken?
44:42 - RS: A friend just wrote me that he's profitable and has tons of users and he can't get any more funding. It is a real problem.
45:40 - KS: I just did an interview with Reid Hoffman and there's winner-take-all going on.
47:30 - KS: I don't think we're in a bubble, and the # of IPOs is drastically lower. Some of the valuations are crazy but it's a small group of companies.
51:28 - RS: The world of journo has changed. It's driven by teams, not individuals.
59:54 - RS: Read my book, Age of Context
1:00:00 - KS: Go to http://Recode.net.
